Tension fabric displays give growing companies a polished look without the weight and bulk of traditional exhibit materials. A well-maintained display also protects a marketing investment and helps a booth stay consistent from one event to the next.

Businesses often rely on the same display for multiple shows each year. That makes routine cleaning and careful storage essential for preserving color, fit, and overall presentation. For companies looking to promote longevity of their booth materials, here’s how to clean and store tension fabric displays.

What Makes Tension Fabric Displays Different

Unlike rigid panels or laminated graphics, tension fabric graphics stretch over a frame for a smooth and seamless appearance. That tight fit creates a clean visual surface, but it also means the material can show stains, creases, or distortion when handled carelessly.

Many business owners treat these displays like ordinary banners or table linens. That approach creates problems because printed exhibit fabric often includes dye-sublimated graphics, fitted seams, and specific stretch properties that need a gentler cleaning process.

A tension fabric system usually includes printed fabric graphics and a lightweight frame. Both parts need attention, but the fabric graphic requires the most care because it carries the brand image that visitors notice first.

Start With The Manufacturer’s Care Guidance

Before using water, soap, or stain treatments, check the care instructions for the specific graphic material. Different fabrics, print methods, and finishing details may require slightly different cleaning steps.

Some graphics can go into a washing machine on a gentle cycle, while others perform better with hand cleaning or spot treatment only. Hardware bags, carry cases, and replacement documents often include these care details, and a booth manufacturer can confirm the safest process.

Skipping this step creates unnecessary risk. One harsh cleaner or one high-heat drying cycle can damage stretch tension, dull the print, or shrink the fabric enough to make reinstallation difficult.

Inspect The Display Before Cleaning

Lay the fabric graphic on a clean surface and inspect it under good light. Look for dust, fingerprints, food residue, scuff marks, makeup transfer, and stains from the show floor or shipping process.

This inspection helps determine whether the display needs a full wash or just spot cleaning. It also helps identify seam stress, loose stitching, or frame-related wear before those issues become bigger problems.

Check the frame at the same time. Bent tubing, damaged connectors, or rough edges can affect how the graphic fits and can cause snags during the next installation.

Use The Least Aggressive Cleaning Method First

Most tension fabric graphics do not need heavy cleaning after every show. In many cases, a light cleaning method removes enough dust and surface grime to restore a sharp appearance.

Start with one of these simple options before moving to a full wash:

  • Shake out loose dust and debris outdoors or in an open workspace
  • Use a clean microfiber cloth to wipe away dry surface dust
  • Spot clean small marks with cold water and mild soap
  • Test any cleaning method on a less visible area first

This approach protects the fabric and prevents overhandling. It also saves time for teams that need to turn around exhibit materials quickly between events.

How To Spot Clean Tension Fabric Graphics

Spot cleaning works well for isolated marks that appear after setup, teardown, or transport. Use a soft cloth, cold water, and a mild detergent without bleach, strong fragrance, or abrasive additives.

Dab the affected area instead of scrubbing it. Aggressive rubbing can spread the stain, roughen the fabric surface, or affect the printed image in that section.

Work from the outside of the mark toward the center. That technique helps control the stain and keeps the cleaned area from developing a noticeable ring.

After cleaning, blot the area with a dry towel and allow it to air dry fully. Do not reinstall the fabric while it is damp because trapped moisture can lead to odor, mildew, or stretching issues.

Washing The Graphic When Deeper Cleaning Is Needed

When the entire graphic looks dull or carries multiple smudges, a full wash may be the better choice. Follow the approved care instructions first, but many tension fabric graphics respond well to cold water, mild detergent, and a gentle cycle.

Do not mix the graphic with heavy garments, rough fabrics, or items with zippers and hooks. Washing the graphic alone or with similarly soft materials reduces the chance of abrasion or snagging.

For recommended hand washing, use a clean basin or sink with cold water and mild soap. Gently move the fabric through the water, rinse thoroughly, and remove excess water without twisting the material.

Drying The Fabric The Right Way

Drying matters just as much as washing. Excess heat can shrink stretch fabric or alter the shape enough to make the graphic difficult to zip, pull, or secure over the frame.

Air drying is the safest option. Hang the fabric neatly or lay it flat on a clean surface so air can circulate and moisture can evaporate evenly.

If the care guidance allows machine drying, use the lowest possible heat setting. Remove the fabric promptly to reduce wrinkling and avoid overheating the material.

Never pack a graphic that still feels cool or slightly damp. Even a small amount of trapped moisture can create mildew, odor, and print damage during transport or storage.

Managing Wrinkles Before The Next Show

Minor wrinkles often relax once the graphic stretches over the frame. That natural tension smooths the material and helps the display regain its intended shape.

For more noticeable creasing, use only the wrinkle-release method approved for that fabric. Some materials can tolerate very low heat or light steaming, while others require air drying and careful hanging only.

Best Practices For Storing The Graphic

Clean graphics should go into storage only after they are completely dry and folded or rolled according to the manufacturer’s guidance. Sharp folds and cramped packing can create set-in wrinkles that become harder to remove later.

Choose a cool, dry indoor location with stable temperatures. Humid storage rooms, hot vehicles, and unprotected garage shelves can damage both the fabric and the frame over time.

Store The Frame With Equal Care

Wipe down frame components before packing them away. Remove dust and debris from connection points so the system assembles smoothly at the next event.

Pack frame parts in the correct compartments and avoid forcing them into overloaded cases. Pressure from improper packing can damage both the hardware and the stored fabric graphic.

Create A Repeatable Care Routine

A simple post-show process also helps businesses protect schedules. When the next event approaches, the booth is ready to travel instead of needing last-minute repairs, emergency cleaning, or replacement graphics.

For companies that exhibit regularly, it helps to assign one person or team to oversee display condition. Clear ownership reduces mistakes and keeps care standards consistent across every show.

Keep The Display Show-ready

Tension fabric displays can stay attractive for years when cleaned with care and stored in the right conditions. Smart maintenance protects image quality, reduces replacement costs, and helps every exhibit present a stronger brand.

Top notch! Excellent service, excellent booth and graphics options resulting in a beautiful booth that serves as a 10x10 and a 10x20 -- the quality and design is much better than previous pop-ups and even easy to assemble! The initial contact was right before COVID and even though production was during COVID and had to work under duress and CDC guidelines, Gene Friedman and his team at Infinity met all timelines and created an amazing exhibit. The team was so easy to work with and walked me through step by step for set up, tear down and packing. The "how to" guide they provided is very detailed, complete with photos! We received so many compliments and have recommended Gene and Infinity Exhibits to many other exhibitors and associates in the broadband industry.

We've been working with Infinity for several years now, and for good reason. The team built us a professional, high quality booth that we instantly fell in love with. So we bought another. And then we wanted to combine the two. Then we had more ideas... and every time, Gene and the rest of the team were there to help envision what we wanted, work through the kinks of building a custom system, answer all of my silly questions, and help out at nearly the drop of a hat every time. We will continue this relationship well into the future, as we continue to fiddle and finagle these booths into whatever our hearts desire, and we know we'll have the support we need.

I was truly nervous of how this booth would work for us, but we needed something we could use repeatedly - to cut down on waste and costs . We also needed to be able to set it up without tools due to the union rules at our show location. We made a few tweaks on site to the original design and we could not be happier without it came out. I made selling our products so easy and we look more credible with out booth design and set up.

I was a novice when it came to designing and constructing a booth as well as the set up tear down process. Gene walked me through the process from start to finish. He educated me beyond expectation even before receiving a PO from me. Gene's openness and willingness to help me understand what I needed to know was invaluable. We ultimately purchased our booth from Infinity Exhibits and the quality of the product and the setup and tear down at our conference was exceptional. Infinity Exhibits sets the benchmark for customer experience, quality, and cost/benefit. I highly recommend Infinity Exhibits to anyone needing their services.

The people at Infinity Exhibits do excellent work at a price that is fair to them as well as the client.

My company ordered a tower from them for our trade show booth a few years ago. In the meantime, some of our products changed and I wanted to reflect the changes with new pictures on the panels of the tower. I contacted Gene and he was very helpful but did explain to me that this was a very busy time for them. Even at that, our new panels shipped just over a week later. I highly recommend them!
